Some Days I Just Feel Overwhelmed
Like all other small business owners I know, I’m moving from one idea to the next.
There’s always something to do as I try to keep my business operating. Blog posts to write, social media marketing content to create plus sending emails to my clients to see if anyone wants to do a special Power Hour Session.
And don’t even get me started with what’s going on my home!
We’re winding down with the last weeks of this online high school stuff. Trying to make sure my son Jake gets his work done and studies for his exams. And making sure that he’s not up at all hours playing some game on his computer.
In between all that, I’m supposed to cook a healthy dinner, keep my house clean and manage everything else in my home that a single mom needs to do to keep this place running.
Truth is – I’m a lousy cook and I bake a lot of chicken every week so we can avoid those frozen dinners. And I’ve had a load of towels in sitting in my dryer for 3 days. I keep turning it back on, thinking I’ll fold them but you know how that one goes.
Some days, I’m good with everything. I feel like I’ve got this whole lockdown thing under control.
But most days, I just feel overwhelmed with my life.
Life of a Small Business Owner
For the most part, I love what I do.
I get excited creating the content for the Create Your Business workbooks. I know what I want to teach the members and the steps I need to take to get them there.
I know that nothing great happens overnight and I’m willing to do the work to get it done.
I’m in it for the long haul. I get it.
But some days with all this COVID virus stuff affecting how we’re doing business … it’s hard to get into that positive mindset to keep everything going.
It’s like when small business owners do that thing when we compare ourselves to others.
We can talk all day long about not comparing the beginning of our story to someone’s middle — but we do.
Or when we hear or read a compliment about ourselves. We say ‘thank you’ but our mind wanders to something else.
We start to question ourselves, “Did she really mean that? What if she really said that to be nice but thinks I’m a fake or clueless or don’t know my stuff?”
We know we shouldn’t let those negative thoughts creep in when something good happens — but we do.
And such is the life of a small business owner during these times when the world has turned upside down.
It would be easy to tell ourselves to power through, get back into your routine and do the work that’s jumping off the page in your planner. But some days, just getting back to work doesn’t always do the trick.
We need a little help to get us back to that positive mindset.
Just Let Your Pile of Good Things Grow
I’m sure that I’m not the only one who is experiencing these moments. And when this happens to me, I remind myself to re-focus my attention on something that brings me back to my happy place.
I’m certainly not a scientist but I do know that the more time you think positive thoughts in your day, the less stress you have in your life.
It’s a pretty simple equation: less stress equals more happiness.
What can you do to get into that Happy Place?
I realize that for some of us, we need to spend some time talking with a counselor to help us work through what we’re feeling.
But for the rest of us, like myself, we just need a little daily reminder to keep us staying in that space of happiness. If you’d like to give this a try, take a look at these apps that will help you create positive habits to help you get through those times when you feel overwhelmed.
1. Happify
How could you not love something with a name like that?
Happify has turned a decade’s worth of research into a series of activities and games that train your brain and build skills for lasting happiness. And they can be used anytime, anywhere—on your smart phone, tablet or computer. Small slices of time can make big-time changes.
2. Positive Thinking
This cool app shows you the steps to take to grow positive thinking.
They offer tips to help you develop a positive attitude. You also get the option to find motivational and inspirational quotes if that’s your thing. You can also find this in the Google store for Droid users.
3. Gratitude Journal App
This app gives you the option of using the Gratitude Journal or you can dive into the 21 Day Mindset Reset.
And it’s more than just an app – When you download the Gratitude Journal, you also receive access to an incredible community of uplifters helping you achieve your goals faster.
I have personally used a gratitude journal app and I’ve always loved the simplicity of it!
At the end of my day, I type in a few words to remind myself what I’m grateful for and something that happened during my day to make me smile. Some days, I just upload an image of something that I captured with my camera.
I realize that isn’t one of my usual posts where I give you steps to do something more efficiently or talk about how to use social media marketing.
But when I sat down to type today, this is what came out.
I know what really connects us is that fact that we’re all small business owners trying to make our way in this great big social world. And some days, we need to talk about this virus stuff to keep us moving forward.
Something that to help us feel like we’re not so alone.
Some days we all need that little extra something to remind us why we’re here and why we love what we do.
